The Smooth Operator

You’d think with all the controlled chaos in this workshop, I’d be a little rough around the edges. But that’s what the Smooth Operator station is for. It might not look like much, tucked away in the corner, but this is where every project has a chance to be reborn. The raw edges, the welds that need to be ground away, the flaws that make a piece truly homemade—they all get a final pass here, transforming from a fabricated part into a finished piece of functional art.

This little corner is home to some of my most important tools. The orbital sander handles the big surfaces, getting a project ready for primer in no time. For the heavy lifting, the angle grinder makes quick work of metal and sends a satisfying shower of sparks across the floor. And for the tiny, meticulous details that truly make a piece perfect, there’s the pen grinder, because every last groove deserves to be polished to perfection.

The name isn’t just a clever pun; it’s a mission statement. Every piece that passes through here has to leave with a finish so smooth it feels like a part of the original design. This is the place where I literally polish away the imperfections and turn a rough idea into a work of art. The chaos might start the process, but the Smooth Operator finishes it, one perfect detail at a time.

I'm not entirely sure what this base was before this. My brain says it was my desk, but it was a very short-lived desk. It was also the stand for my very first 3D printer, but I thought I sent that along with the person who bought it. The past is a bit fuzzy, but the future is clear: this was the very start of the Smooth Operator station.
